Own the fear of change
Try Something New!
As the owner and operator of a large number of New York City apartments, I run into people all the time who are weary of change. People grow comfortable with familiarity, so I suppose it’s natural to be afraid of new things. That same primal instinct that allowed us to get to the 21st century – the fear of the unknown – can be a hinderance in these modern times, though, since everything is new and different.
Security

People like to know that they’re safe. Changing from one thing to another can be difficult for most people and can make many people confused as they take people away from something they know is safe and transition them to the unknown.
Anxiety
Change can lead to fear, worry and anxiety, a normal reaction to stress. When anxiety becomes prevalent in someone’s life, it’s not unusual for that person to need special attention or help.
Long-Standing Anxiety
I had a minor panic attack when I moved far away from my family and into a new apartment. I was literally nauseous. Fortunately, I learned to deal with the frustration and homesickness quickly and would strongly encourage anyone with similar feelings to learn to do the same, since mental stress can have physical repercussions if not managed properly. In fact, studies have shown that mental stress is actually bad for your heart.
Reach Out
Different people deal with stress in different ways. Some, who are overcome with emotion from stress may be best served talking with a psychologist or therapist. For others, just talking about what ails them with friends and family can relieve a lot of the inner burden the stress creates. For others still, sometimes the stress is best handled internally. There is not one solution for everyone.
When dealing with the type of stress that I was dealing with – moving – it can be beneficial to first acknowledge and admit to yourself that you’re stressed. And that the stress is the result of fear. Whether you tell someone else or just admit it to yourself, the important thing is to recognize the emotions you’re feeling.
Stay Ahead of The Curve
Anxiety can be kept at bay with a good exercise regiment. The same is true for household chores. They “burn off” some of that adrenaline and leave you feeling positive. The nice side effect of both of those examples is that you end up in better shape and your chores are done.
Sticking with the moving example, it often helps to decorate your new apartment or home in order to make it more familiar. This can be done with photos or even a particular color of paint that will make your new place less foreign. Also, make new memories in your new place.
Lastly, work on your outlook. Find the silver lining in things are dwell on the positives. But again, the first step is to admit that your outlook needs improvement and go from there.
